Nothing Left But Mud
A downloadable short story
Jane drives down to her parents’ house at the Jersey Shore on a Friday evening. By Monday morning, a deadly disease has spread across America. With the highways closed, cities quarantined, and supplies spread thin, Jane stays with her aging parents as the whole world changes around them.
Jennifer R. Donohue leads us through a day in Jane’s life as she harvests natural resources for the medical center, bikes through a sudden thunderstorm, visits the increasingly-barren grocery store, and…goes on a first date? In the face of uncertainty, Jane searches for meaning, catharsis, and hope.
As we all face a different pandemic in the real world, we hope that this story about what we do for love, loyalty, family, and community brings a measure of hope as well. As Donohue writes in her author’s note, “There’s a lot to protect, and a lot to hope for, and a lot that we haven’t lost.”
